The Religion program at The Cathedral School has several components designed to nurture the spiritual journey of each child.

Morning Prayer in the Classroom with Teacher
This builds a community of trust and starts each day with the awareness of God's presence.

Religion Class
Every student attends a weekly religion class which utilizes the Christian Formation Curriculum called "Catechesis of the Good Shepherd." This is not an "Episcopal" curriculum, but one based on Bible and the shared worship of the school community. (More about Catechesis of the Good Shepherd below.)

Artwork, music, and prayer are excellent tools of creativity which can be found within the Religion Curriculum of The Cathedral School. Students are encouraged to write about, draw about, sing about, pray about spiritual insights which cry out for expression. In the Religion classroom, only beautiful materials are offered to the child. The art supplies are among the best. From time to time, beautiful artwork of others (professionals and amateurs, alike) are offered for meditation. The spiritual realm relies upon its expression in these ways, and the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd facilitates this quite well.

Chapel
Chapel services are held 3 times per week. Tuesday (Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd graders), Wednesday (all-school chapel) and Thursday (3rd, 4th and 5th graders). Chapel on Wednesday and Thursday is led by students who read the Bible and write AND read prayers.

Holy Eucharist
Once monthly, a Holy Eucharist (holy communion) service is held with 5th graders officiating. This is designed to meet the developmental needs of younger children, and is in the Episcopal tradition.

This curriculum is a tool for offering the child "food" for the spiritual journey. It begins with the knowledge that each child already has an existing relationship with God, and longs for ways to nurture that relationship. We concentrate on the many forms of prayer, we study the Bible together, we ask the BIG questions together, we learn to listen to one another, and we take careful looks at our shared worship. A direct aim of our Chaplain is to provide a safe and inclusive place for children of all traditions. God is introduced through the parable of the Good Shepherd (Gospel of John) who "knows his sheep by name, calls them and leads them, feeds them, and searches for them (when lost) UNTIL they are found." It has been our experience that this loving, intimate metaphor for God truly resonates with the children, who carry the idea of being known and loved just as they are-throughout their lives.
