At The Cathedral School parents are honored as child's first teacher.
The connection between the home environment and the school is seen
as essential to ensuring success of children as they grow and learn.
The Cathedral School strives to offer multiple opportunities for
parents to learn about their child's education, to grow as parents
and to build relationships with other families within our community.
Communication is a key factor for keeping parents
and families involved in their child's education. Monthly newsletters
or "Heads Up" reminders that include updates on upcoming
events and news of interest to our community are sent home on a
weekly basis. Each classroom teacher sends home a Thursday newsletter
noting specific events within the classroom setting. Students build
their study and organizational skills by bringing home a daily communication
folder or assignment book.
At least once a month parents are invited to join
members of The Cathedral School staff at a "Brown Bag Lunch."
A Brown Bag Lunch is an hour long presentation during lunchtime
so that parents can bring their lunch and hear information presented
on various topics such as transitioning a student from one grade
level to the next, enriching a child's education at home, teaching
through the strategies used at TCS, introducing new families to
the school community and the school handbook, learning about upcoming
school programs and more. The presentations provide parents with
insight into their child's world at school and produce a common
vocabulary for discussion about those events while allowing parents
to provide the staff with feedback concerning the presentation.
Twice a year parents are invited to a Parent Information
evening meeting. During this meeting, information is shared about
school programs or institutional issues for the good of the community.
At this meeting, Focus Groups of parents are often asked to join
round table discussions from which opinions are solicited and recorded
concerning future programs at The Cathedral School.
The Morris Parent Center in the Development Office
offers a unique place for parents to learn more about their most
important job of parenting. The center houses learning resources,
a parenting library and a used uniform store. It also serves as
a gathering place for parents and parent volunteers.
Books are available for checkout by simply coming
to the Parent Center, selecting your book and signing the library
card. Parents are welcome to keep the book for up to two weeks.
Parent education opportunites also inlcude book
groups, orientations, parenting courses and guest speakers from
community organizations that promote positive family growth.
